Venue: Hall 3, Devan Nair Institute
Limited Seats: 80 pax Only
Following the Islamic Mental Health Convention 2024 held on 16 November, this workshop is designed exclusively for practitioners to dive deeper into techniques, best practices and innovative approaches in the field. This specialized workshop is designed to equip mental health practitioners and those in the helping professions with advanced skills to effectively integrate Islamic traditions into mental health care. If you work with Muslim clients or seek to deepen your understanding of culturally sensitive approaches, this session will provide essential knowledge and strategies. With only 80 seats available, this is a unique opportunity to enhance your practice and approach to mental health care.
Workshop Overview
This workshop will address the key areas essential for integrating Islamic perspectives into mental health care, including how to challenge misconceptions, explore spiritual dimensions, and understand the critical concept of whispers—whether they stem from nafs (self), shaytaan (Satan), or jinn (supernatural beings). Participants will gain insights into the psychological and spiritual aspects of conditions such as OCD, depression, and anxiety, and learn practical approaches for managing these unique challenges.
Key Objectives of the Workshop:
1. Addressing Misconceptions
This session provides participants with tools to challenge and correct common
misconceptions about mental health within Muslim communities, particularly
around issues like depression, anxiety, and OCD. By addressing these
misconceptions, practitioners will be better equipped to promote accurate
perceptions and reduce stigma.
2. Exploring Spiritual Dimensions
Explore the often-overlooked spiritual dimensions of mental health, including
concepts of the soul, such as qalb (heart), aql (intellect), and nafs
(self). Participants will delve into the origins of waswas (whispers)
from Shaytaan or Jinn, and gain an understanding of phenomena such as sihir
(black magic), ayn (the evil eye), and interactions with jinn.
This discussion will aid practitioners in differentiating cultural beliefs from
Islamic teachings and understanding how these beliefs intersect with mental
health issues.
3. Integrating Islamic Traditions with Mental Health
Practices
Learn advanced strategies to blend Islamic principles with evidence-based
mental health practices. Practitioners will explore the ethical use of
spiritual practices like ruqyah within a clinical setting, particularly
for conditions such as OCD, depression, and anxiety. This integration ensures
that mental health care remains relevant and sensitive to clients’ spiritual
needs, enhancing the effectiveness of treatment.
Why Attend?
This workshop is an exceptional opportunity to develop specialized expertise in providing culturally and spiritually informed care. By addressing misconceptions, exploring spiritual dimensions, and integrating Islamic traditions with clinical practices, attendees will gain valuable insights and practical skills to enhance their impact in the mental health field.
